Mission Statement

As Clemson composition students, we strive to uphold the values of Clemson University, maintain a high quality standard of writing, and successfully implement rhetorical strategies in our work.

Project 5

Please read the attached document for next class. I've pasted the following info on the blog, on a separate page that I created for project 5:

Project Five: The Researched Argument, Due Friday, May 2

This assignment requires students to practice your rhetorical knowledge and develop an extended researched argument using multimodal composition strategies. Write an argumentative essay on a topic that really matters to you. Remember you are writing an argument to a general and diverse audience, so in order to be persuasive and effective it is necessary to support your claims with evidence from a variety of sources. Remember to incorporate possible objections to your argument, rebuttals to those objections, with a goal of helping to mediate opposing sides of an issue (rather than offer mere opinions).
The goal is not to achieve consensus, but to put forth a well-reasoned and well-supported argument that helps your audience move toward understanding, rather than conflict.
Your essay should be at least 2000 words and have a Works Cited of at least 10 sources (formatted using MLA guidelines). You must submit the paper via Blackboard by Friday,
May 2 at 8 a.m. You must drop a hardcopy off to Strode 107. NO EXCEPTIONS. *It is your responsibility to ensure, before the deadline, that
you have understood how to submit your assignment through Blackboard. You are
responsible for your work, regardless of technical problems, so plan accordingly.

This project is worth 20% of your Final Grade

All topics / analytical questions must be approved by me (In other words, I will help you to set up a good paper). You might want to consider using your video game project as a starting point to further your research re. a particular/more narrow topic of interest.

List of Unacceptable Topics:
Gun control
Legalization of marijuana
*If you and a classmate write about the same topic, you must distinguish your work from that of your peer.
*You are not allowed to use papers from previous classes.
**It is your responsibility to ensure, before the deadline, that you have understood how to submit your assignment through Blackboard. You are responsible for your work, regardless of technical problems, so plan accordingly.

There are two more weeks left of class, so:

Next week:
Tuesday - Analytical Question Due & have read the techniques document that is attached Thursday - Outline & Reading Due

Following week:
Tuesday - Draft Due & Reading Due / Workshop
Thursday - Draft Due  & Reading Due / Workshop

*All drafts are for peer review; you do not need to turn in a draft to me, however you are welcome to meet me for office hours to discuss your progress and/or specific questions that you might have.

Throughout the next two weeks, we'll read sample student works and focus on techniques for writing a scholarly paper.
